
MOYA JOHNSON
is a producer and writer with over 10 years of experience in TV production. Her passion for storytelling began as a teenager in Cairo, Georgia, writing published short stories about her family and Southern Heritage. As a young writer, Moya’s career blossomed; she worked as a tv news producer while in college. She studied journalism at Florida A&M University and later worked as a journalist at local news stations across the country, CNN, NBC News and Forbes. After an extensive career in broadcast, she pivoted to producing documentaries, short films and scripted television. With a love for music, nature and travel, Moya founded South Broad Street Productions in 2023. Her goal is to tell diverse stories, with diverse filmmakers for diverse audiences.
Moya’s 2024 projects include, The Off-Brands, a proof of concept and feature film by Shayla Racquel Films. The project provides a diverse and inclusive look at community, nostalgia, hope, and visibility through both the plot and its characters. The Off-Brands showcases underrepresented communities - people with disabilities, Black southern culture, and Y2K. The Off-Brands is the winner of a $40,000 grant sponsored by the South Carolina Film Commission’s Indie Grants program.
Return of the Wax explores the history of vinyl records through the lens of Black Culture and Hip-Hop. Centered around historians and collectors, Return of the Wax focuses on vinyl's resurgence, legacy collectors and the ones that are just getting started.
With history spanning over a century, Return of the Wax focuses on vinyl's resurgence, new and legacy collectors, the influence of hip-hop on the vinyl and record player manufacturing industries. The docuseries weaves history with personal stories, commerce, creativity and a passion for something old that’s new again.
En Route is a behind-the-scenes music series that showcases under-heard, emerging artists in a way that hasn’t been done since early 2000s BET. The show feels like the first time you popped in your favorite CD. Artists discuss what it’s like to be en route to their ultimate musical destination, while walking the audience through their recording and performance process. The show caps off with a unique, multi-song set designed by the artist.
Moya is also a 2024 Southern Producers Lab fellow sponsored by the New Orleans Film Society.
